8 TIPS FOR A HIGH QUALITY HEADSHOT ON YOUR PHONE

Let’s be honest, recruiters and hiring managers look at your social media profiles. Make a great first impression with a professional photo and profile. A nice headshot photo is a great way to display your professionalism to employers and make a great first impression; It helps them identify you and shows your authenticity. 1. Use portrait mode

Taking headshots on portrait mode keeps objects in the foreground focused while blurring the background. This mode works best in a clean and open setting. It is perfect for taking professional headshots because you want the focus of the image to be directly on you. Pro tip: Clean the front of your camera lens beforehand to ensure you get a clear crisp photo.

2. Take your picture with your back camera

Whether you have someone else take your photo or set up a timer to take it, use the back camera for the highest resolution. The quality of the image will turn out better than if you were to take it on your front camera. Pro tip: Take multiple pictures so you have plenty of options to choose from.

3. Good lighting

Sunlight through a window or an open room is ideal for taking headshots; the natural lighting will best highlight your features. If you take your pictures where there isn’t enough lighting, it could cause harsh shadows on your face. On the other hand, if you take your photos in direct sunlight, it will cause you to squint and your photos will come out over exposed. Pro tip: If you do run into these issues, you can fix them in the photo editing app using the brightness and exposure features.

4. Dress for success

Wearing presentable clothing in your headshot photo shows employers that you want to be perceived in a professional manner and that you care about your appearance. A collared shirt, blouse, business suit or blazer are great options to wear in your photo. Make sure that if you are wearing an employee badge that you remove it before snapping the photo. Pro tip: Dress how you would for your headshot photo as if you were going to a job interview.

5. Angle and distance

A headshot is intended to be your torso and up, so you want to stand just about 2 feet away from your camera when taking your picture. It helps to face the camera at a 45-degree angle and tilt your head down slightly for the best results. Pro tip: Take pictures from a variety of angles to see which you prefer.

6. Natural pose with a smile

You want to come across as friendly and approachable in your headshot, be sure to smile to leave a good impression. Natural poses work best, place your hands by your side or cross your arms. Pro tip: Have good posture by standing up straight with your shoulders back to portray confidence.

7. Edit your photos

The great part about taking pictures on your phone is you can edit them directly in the photos app. Typically, adding a subtle contrast, increasing the vibrancy and slightly decreasing the brightness of your photo will make it pop more. Pro tip: Make adjustments as needed, but do not over edit your photos as this can look very natural and ruin your picture.

8. Turn off picture compression

If you are sending your image via Outlook, Teams, or another app be sure that your picture compression settings are turned off. Compressing a picture will decrease the resolution and quality of your image; if you skip this step then all that hard work you put in to taking your headshot will be gone because your image will look very pixelated. If you are uploading the picture directly from your phone, you shouldn’t run into any issues.  Pro tip: Your camera settings should be set to high efficiency or HDR mode to take the highest resolution photos.

Take a stellar headshot to make a great first impression when you apply to TQL today.
